Despite federal policy, the adoption of grid tied PV and electric vehicles (EVs) continues to surge in the US. Through the use of simple smart charging to determine the best timing, this can not only save the customer money but also can serve to stabilize the grid. PV systems help the grid by peak load shaving during hot summer days. Also, the grid-tied PV system avoids the 5-10% losses experienced in the grid transmission network by generating power at the point of usage. EV’s are an excellent means of reducing air pollution, dependence on oil tyrants, and through smart charging, can help stabilize the grid by filling the overnight trough in grid energy usage. Our clients reach the fullest value through the combination of PV on the roof and an EV in the garage, when one is replacing the consumption of gasoline with homegrown clean solar power.
RMI has been talking about this potential for more than 25 years. This article represents their latest thinking about the benefits of EV’s on the grid and on your bills.
